Emergencies, Incidents and First Aid

Fire Emergency

If you discover a fire:

  • If safe to do so, close the door to contain the fire
  • Activate the nearest fire alarm call point
  • Call the emergency services (999) or Security Services Emergency Control on 0118 378 6300 (ext. 6300)
  • Evacuate immediately via the nearest safe fire exit and proceed to the designated assembly point
  • Only attempt to extinguish the fire if it is safe and you are trained to do so

If you contact the emergency services directly, you must also warn Security Services so they can assist emergency responders on arrival.

When the Fire Alarm Sounds

On hearing a continuous fire alarm:

  • Leave the building immediately using the nearest safe exit
  • Do not use lifts unless specifically designated for the evacuation of disabled persons
  • Assist anyone who requires help to reach a Refuge Area or evacuate safely
  • Close doors and windows where safe to do so
  • In laboratories and workshops, make equipment and processes safe if possible
  • Report to your designated assembly point and follow the instructions of the Fire Wardens
  • Do not re-enter the building until authorised by the Emergency Services or Evacuation Officer.

Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs)

Staff, students and visitors who may require assistance during an evacuation should inform their School or Department. A Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) will be developed to support safe evacuation.

First Aid

Serious Injury or Medical Emergency

  • Call 999 to request an ambulance
  • Immediately notify Security Services on 0118 378 6300 (ext. 6300)
  • Be prepared to provide the nature of the injury or illness, the casualty's condition, and your exact location (building, floor and room number)
  • If possible, arrange for someone to direct emergency responders to the scene

Minor Injury or Illness

Contact a designated First Aider. Every campus building has trained First Aiders available during normal working hours.

Finding a First Aider

Details of local First Aiders, First Aid kits, and defibrillator locations are displayed near building entrances. Alternatively, contact Security Services on 0118 378 6300 (ext. 6300), who can arrange assistance.

NHS 111

Contact NHS 111 if:

  • You need medical advice but it is not an emergency
  • You are unsure whether urgent care is required
  • You do not know who to contact for medical help
  • You need health information or reassurance about what to do next
