As a Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) student, you will benefit directly from our world-class research into subjects such as linguistics, language development, language pathology, and bilingualism.
Placement
You will carry out weekly placements throughout this course. These take place in a large range of clinical settings, including:
- NHS organisations
- schools
- the private and voluntary sector.
Our in-house team organises your placements. Placements are carefully selected to give you a variety of experiences. You'll have the opportunity to work alongside enthusiastic professionals in a well-supported environment. You'll work with a wide range of children and adults. THis helps you develop your communication, clinical and research skills in professional settings.

Learn in our in-house clinic
You will benefit from access to our in-house ’s observational facilities, speech research laboratory and sound recording room.
Our purpose-built NHS clinic supports adult and paediatric clients with a wide range of speech, language and communication difficulties. From the start of your studies, you will gain hands-on experience across day-to-day clinic activities, including:
- telephone triage (assessing patients over the phone)
- assessment
- therapy
- training workshops.
All students within the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences have access to dedicated study spaces, including:
- a computer lab
- common rooms
- resources room
- assessment library
- testing cubicles.
What you’ll learn
This course combines theoretical knowledge with clinical practice and you will gain hands-on experience right from the start. In year one, you will complete a Child Development Assignment. You'll follow a baby's development through home visits over approximately 18 months. This helps you understand a child's typical development, and enable you to build your professional skills of interacting with parents and engaging with young children.
Throughout the course you will study core modules in:
- linguistics
- psychology
- medical sciences
- language pathology.
You will also cover therapy and management, and how to diagnose, assess and treat (or manage) communication and swallowing disorders.
You'll have the opportunity to gain valuable experience of working within a large range of professional settings. This includes both weekly and block placement opportunities. The majority of our staff are practising speech and language therapists, and they will give you a direct insight into the latest developments in clinical practice.
During the final year you will be able to pursue your own interests through optional subjects such as autism spectrum disorders or specific language impairments. Additionally, you will carry out an original piece of research and write a dissertation.
